4/14/2022 • Annapolis, MD • Maryland has approved a bill making Montessori teachers eligible for Maryland State teaching licenses.
The bill, House Bill 467, allows teachers with a bachelor’s degree and a Montessori credential issued by the American Montessori Society, the Association Montessori Internationale, or by any MACTE-accredited institution to be eligible for a Maryland State teaching license after passing required state tests.
The passage of this bill is the culmination of work by Montessori Schools of Maryland (MSM) and the Montessori Public Policy Initiative (MPPI) going back to at least 2018 when the bill was introduced for the first time.
Ten states (Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, Ohio, South Carolina, and Wisconsin) now offer some form of pathway for Montessori trained teachers to receive state licensure.
